Last reviewed October 22, 2026. This is general information about renting in Texas, not legal or financial advice. Laws, prices, and screening rules change, so confirm details with each community and talk with an attorney about your own situation.

Renting without US credit history trips up a lot of people. We often see well qualified professionals get turned down for a lease, and it's frustrating to watch.

To most screening software, a blank credit report looks just as bad as a 500 credit score. That puts international renters in the same tough spot as second chance renters.

We get how stressful it is to start from zero credit. A standard apartment application in the U.S. all but demands a Social Security number and a credit history.

Our team has spent years working out ways around this. We work with first time renters who have no credit history, including people who just moved to the U.S. Let’s look at the numbers, the other ways to get approved, and the kinds of Texas properties where it works best.

## What communities accept in place of U.S. credit

Many newer Texas communities will take other proof of income and foreign records instead of a U.S. credit score. We see leasing offices swap the usual credit check for a mix of visa paperwork, offer letters, and special screening tools.

A blank file isn't an automatic no anymore if you know what to bring. We've had good luck with tools like Nova Credit. It turns a foreign credit report from a country like the UK or India into a U.S. version. Screening platforms like Yardi and Entrata can pull it right into the application.

Pull your backup documents together before you tour anything. The most common ones fall into a few groups.

| Document Type | What It Proves | How Much It Helps |
|---|---|---|
| **U.S. Employment Offer** | Income, salary, and start date | High (Strongest proof) |
| **Nova Credit Translation** | Your credit history from back home | High (if the property takes it) |
| **Visa (H-1B, L-1, F-1)** | Legal status that lasts past the lease | Medium (needs income proof too) |
| **International Bank Statements** | Savings (converted to USD) | Medium (often needs a CPA letter) |
| **ITIN (Tax ID)** | A tax ID number to use for screening | Medium (used in place of an SSN) |

An offer letter on company letterhead is the strongest thing you can bring. Have your HR department sign it and list your exact U.S. start date. Downtown luxury properties often want two months of bank statements too, to see your savings.

Many properties we work with accept a passport in place of an ITIN or Social Security number. Zolve is another good tool that lets you open a U.S. bank account before you even land. And having that banking history early gives you a big leg up when you apply.

## Communities that work for international renters

Finding an apartment in Texas as an international renter is much easier if you focus on three kinds of properties. Our clients land most often in buildings near the big tech employers, around the universities, and at properties with newer screening software.

These places are used to unusual money backgrounds. Here's where we have the most luck.

### Near the Big Employers

Properties near the big job centers in Austin, Houston, Dallas, Fort Worth, and San Antonio handle international applicants often. Many of them accept offer letters from nearby employers. The leasing teams in these buildings know how H-1B visas and relocation timelines work.

### University Neighborhoods

Buildings near big university campuses in each metro are used to F-1 visa paperwork. Our clients on F-1 visas find these properties already know how to handle a foreign guarantor or financial aid paperwork. They rarely blink at an international passport.

### Buildings With Newer Screening Software

Newer properties use screening software that already has a process for applicants from other countries. We suggest aiming for buildings on platforms like Yardi, which can take other kinds of income proof and foreign credit reports. It uses the same rules for every applicant.

## What deposits look like

Properties will usually ask international renters for a higher security deposit to make up for having no credit history. We often see them ask for 1.5 to 2 times the usual deposit of one month's rent.

[Texas Property Code Chapter 92](https://statutes.capitol.texas.gov/Docs/PR/htm/PR.92.htm#92.101) doesn't put a limit on security deposits. So a $1,800 a month apartment might ask for a $3,600 deposit up front. That's a lot of cash for someone who just arrived.

To keep you from draining your savings, we often point renters to these other options:

- **Professional Guarantors:** Companies like Jetty, Leap, and TheGuarantors act as your co-signer.
- **Guarantor Fees:** These services usually charge a fee you don't get back, about 40 to 130 percent of one month’s rent. International renters tend to land near the top.
- **U.S. Co-signers:** A family member or friend with a credit score above 700 can sign the lease with you.
- **Upfront Rent:** Paying six to twelve months of rent in advance is legal in Texas, and some properties will take it.

A guarantor service is usually the first choice for people moving for work. Check that the building takes outside guarantors before you apply. Not every landlord does.

## Renting before you see it

Renting a place before you land in the United States takes a well planned [sight-unseen relocation process](/guide/sight-unseen-apartment-relocation-to-austin/). We handle this for clients who need a verified address for their visa paperwork right away.

Signing a lease from overseas is common now. We lean on tools like Matterport 3D tours so clients get a real look at the exact unit. You don't want surprises on move-in day.

Give yourself 7 to 14 days to finish the whole thing remotely. It usually goes in this order:

- **Send Your Documents:** You upload your passport, visa, and offer letter.
- **Virtual Touring:** The leasing office gives you a live video tour on Zoom or FaceTime.
- **Digital Signing:** You sign the lease through a secure online portal.
- **Send the Money:** You wire the deposit and first month’s rent with a service like Wise. That skips high international bank fees.
- **Arrival and Keys:** You pick up your keys from the leasing office as soon as you get to Texas.

Opening a U.S. bank account often takes longer than getting approved for the apartment. Make the bank your first stop when you land, since a local account makes paying rent much cheaper and faster.

## Common questions we get

Starting your finances from scratch brings up a lot of questions. We spend plenty of time walking clients through the right first steps.

Here's what people with no U.S. credit ask us most.

### Should I get a U.S. credit card before applying?

You don't have to have one, but it helps if you have time. We often suggest a secured card from a big issuer like Capital One as soon as you arrive. Those cards report to all three credit bureaus. That builds history fast.

### What about a Social Security number?

Use your SSN if your work visa comes with one. The IRS says to allow about seven weeks for an ITIN, and 9 to 11 weeks at tax time or if you apply from overseas. Many communities on our list accept a passport alone.

### How long do I need to be in the U.S. before I can rent?

You don't need to be in the country at all. Our international clients often sign leases weeks before their plane lands.

How strong your job proof is matters far more than how long you've been here.

When you're ready, [tell us your situation](/get-my-list/): your visa status, income, and move date. Within 24 to 48 hours on weekdays, we'll send you a short list of communities in your Texas metro that work with international applicants.

It's free, with no obligation.

## Frequently Asked Questions

### Can I rent in Texas with no U.S. credit history?

Yes. Many Texas communities accept international applicants who bring a passport, visa, job offer letter, and bank statements in place of a U.S. credit file. You may need a larger security deposit or a guarantor, but plenty of people have done it before you.

### What documents help newcomers?

Bring your passport, your visa or work authorization, and a U.S. job offer letter (or current pay stubs if you're already working). Add 2 to 3 months of U.S. bank statements if you have them, or international bank statements with the amounts converted to dollars. Some communities accept foreign credit reports.

### Will I need a bigger deposit as an international renter?

Often, yes. A deposit of 1.5x to 2x the normal amount is common when there's no U.S. credit to check. You get it back after a clean move-out. Sometimes a guarantor service or a co-signer in the U.S. can take the place of the bigger deposit.

### Want a short list of apartments that fit your file?

Our licensed Texas locators check your file against each community's written screening rules in Austin, Houston, Dallas, Fort Worth, and San Antonio. We work with every credit score, including under 500. It's 100% free.
